Service and maintain your air-conditioner regularly
* Check indoor fan for unusual noises.
* Clean indoor/outdoor coil.
* Clean the air filter of the indoor unit regularly. Clogged filter may freeze up the coil, reduce airflow and cooling capacity. Clean the filter once every two weeks, with vacuum cleaner, or by tapping lightly and washing in lukewarm water (below 40° C) with neutral soap.
Remove any dirt that may clog between the fins at least once a month.
* Engage contractor for preventive service
At least once every two years, check the gas pressure, wiring connection and running current.
Clean the blower fan and chemical cleaning for the coil, if necessary.

Set the thermostat between 22° C - 26° C for optimum comfort
Turn on the air-conditioner early
If you expect a hot day, it is better to turn on the air-conditioner early rather than wait until the room is hot. That way, it will be easier to cool the room

Keep the room temperature uniform
Adjust the vertical and horizontal vanes to ensure good coverage of airflow to the room and to distribute uniform temperature.

Install indoor unit at a position where airflow is evenly distributed.

Ensure that there is no irregularity on the power plug and socket
If the plug is loosely plugged or there is any damage to the electrical wire cord, danger of short circuiting is great.

Make sure your air-conditioner is protected with a starter
TNB regulation requires a starter to limit running current as well as to act as a default-off switch. A starter will prevent fire hazards as a result from overloading and over current.

Remove the power plug when the unit is not used for a long time
Place your outdoor unit at a shady place
This would ensure higher efficiency.

A class action lawsuit, Hilton vs. Panasonic Corporation of North America, was filed on February 27, 2007 in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson County, and removed to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. The plaintiffs are Sheri Hilton, Jay Grover, Joseph Morgan and Christine Morgan on behalf of the proposed class against PNA. Class members are all persons who purchased a 2002 or 2004 Model Panasonic Multimedia Projection Display LC-Series television set with model numbers PT-40LC12, PT-45LC12, PT-43LC14, PT-50LC14 or PT-60LC14. Panasonic denies any wrongdoing, but after extensive negotiations the parties have reached a settlement of these claims.

If you are the purchaser of one of the named model televisions and experienced an out-of-warranty, or un-reimbursed lamp failure within 24 months of the date of purchase, you may be a member of the Class entitled to reimbursement for the replacement cost of one (1) lamp with proof of purchase of the television and lamp.

Eating disorders are often thought of as a problem of troubled teens or young women in college. But that's far from the only truth. Adults — even older adults — also can have eating disorders, whether it's anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder or a nonspecific eating disorder.

Donald McAlpine, M.D., a psychiatrist and the director of the adult outpatient eating disorders services at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., treats people with eating disorders. Here, he discusses how eating disorders affect adult women.

The typical image of someone with an eating disorder is an adolescent girl or a young woman. But can adult women have eating disorders, too?

It's true that eating disorders usually affect younger women, peaking in the late teens or early 20s. However, eating disorders also affect woman in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

These women typically fall into three categories:

Women who have secretly struggled with an eating disorder their entire life without seeking treatment
Women who were treated for eating disorders when they were younger and develop a recurrence when they get older
Women who first develop an eating disorder as an adult

Are women more likely to have an eating disorder as an adult if they had one as a teen or young woman?

Most women who receive appropriate treatment get well enough that they no longer meet the criteria for being diagnosed with an eating disorder. However, many women will continue to have some degree of lingering signs or symptoms of an eating disorder that can flare up under stress. These may include bingeing and purging, such as vomiting, or renewed efforts to restrict eating with significant weight loss.

Are the characteristics of eating disorders different for women in their 30s and beyond?

There are several differences in eating disorders depending on age, including:

Common triggers. Young women with bulimia nervosa are often driven by excessive concern with weight, shape and body image. Older women, on the other hand, may be driven to binge and purge to cope with unpleasant mood stages. Of course, women at any age can struggle with poor body image, even women in their 60s and 70s. Eating disorders in women in their 40s and beyond are often triggered by such life events as the death of a loved one, divorce, remarriage, traumatic illness or signs of aging.
Denial. Denial is very common in younger women with anorexia nervosa but seems to be less common in older women. Older women may more readily acknowledge that an eating disorder is harming their life and seek help. Older women who are worn down by years of symptoms may also be more motivated to seek help. Motivation for change often leads to a more successful outcome in treating the illness.
Identity and coping. Years of daily eating disorder symptoms can become deeply engrained. Women who have had symptoms for years may ironically find it difficult to live without this eating disorder identity or coping style, as uncomfortable or emotionally painful as it may be.
Health effects. Eating disorders have dangerous health effects at any age. But older women — those in their 60s and beyond — are especially at risk. In fact, most people who die of the effects of anorexia are older than age 65 — not young girls. Older women with a long history of eating disorders may have developed much more serious health problems. In addition, they may have other health conditions that make them more vulnerable to problems from eating disorders.

How does the treatment for eating disorders of older women differ from that of younger women?

It's common for older women to tell me that when they were younger — and still in denial about their illness — that they bluffed their way through treatment. They would return to eating disorder behaviors as soon as they were done with treatment because they never truly were that motivated to overcome their eating disorder. Now older and wiser, these women may do better with treatment because they no longer have that youthful sense of immortality and they're more aware of the consequences of their disease, such as osteoporosis. For these reasons, they're often more motivated to overcome their eating disorder.

We still have a long way to go, but treatment programs have progressed substantially in the last two decades. Cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders — focusing on self-monitoring, homework assignments and goal setting — was in its infancy in the early 1980s. Women treated for eating disorders in midlife may find that the treatment they had 20 years ago offers much greater benefit to them now. And since their initial treatment, new medications have been approved for eating disorders.

Women discouraged by unsuccessful treatment when they were younger should seek help again. Much more is now known about eating disorders and their treatment.

How likely is it that if a mother has an eating disorder, her daughter also will? What can parents do about this?

Parental attitude about food and their values about what constitutes a healthy weight definitely have an impact on children. It's not uncommon for mothers with eating disorders to seek help because they don't want to pass on their unhealthy attitudes about eating to their children, who also can mimic disordered eating behaviors.

As a parent, be on the lookout for warning signs of eating disorders in your children, which may include:

Excessive weight loss
Excessive exercise
Skipping meals
Being extremely fussy about food
Frequent trips to the bathroom after meals
Laxative use

Also, watch for extreme concern about shape, weight and body image. And listen to what your children are saying about issues related to food, body image, dieting and exercise. That can provide important clues about whether their own attitudes are healthy or not.

What about adult men? Don't they get eating disorders too?

Yes, males of all ages, whether adolescents or older adults, can have eating disorders, just like women of all ages. Adult men with eating disorders often have a history of being obese. They also may be striving for a more athletic or muscular build, sometimes known as reverse anorexia because they want to build broader shoulders and arms. Men are less likely than are women to engage in vomiting as a way to purge, and instead may turn more often to compulsive exercise, weight-loss supplements or weight-enhancing supplements. Like women, they also can benefit greatly with appropriate treatment.

DAIL 999 for all emergencies in Malaysia

On call 24/7: Khirah Misni adjusting her headset while attending to a call at a TM Bhd call centre in Banda Kaaba, Malacca, on Monday. TM Bhd operates eight emergency services centres nationwide 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has 138 trained staff dedicated to handle the emergency calls.

PUTRAJAYA: It's back to 999 to report all forms of emergencies.

And callers can expect their calls to be answered within 10 seconds or after four rings.

Cellular phone users who had been dialling 112 could also dial the 999 numbers to reach the emergency call centre.

Unlike before people need not dial three sets of numbers (999, 994, 991 and 112 - for cellular phone users) to reach the different emergency and rescue service providers in the country.

Deputy Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said specially-trained professionals from the 999 Emergency Call Service Centre would handle all emergency calls and reroute them, complete with digital data on the type of emergency and location.

The calls would then be handled by the respective emergency service providers like the police, ambulance, fire stations and civil defence rescue units.

Shaziman said the 999 call centre would be fully managed by Telekom Malaysia (TM) Bhd and a nationwide campaign on the use of a single number was being carried out.

“By January next year, the 991 and 994 numbers will not be used anymore, but those who still use it to call emergency service will be rerouted to the emergency call centre located throughout the country,” he told reporters during a soft launch of the single emergency number and awareness campaign called Satu Negara Satu Nombor – 999.

Shaziman said the problem of emergency calls not being answered should not arise as the unattended calls would be passed to the next available call centre.

There are a total of eight emergency call centres in the country, with the latest centre opening in Malacca.

Parallel emergency numbers, such as 991 for the Civil Defence Department and 994 for Fire and Rescue, were introduced in 1991, so that such calls could be handled directly by the departments concerned.

Before that, a single emergency number 999 was used to report all emergencies.

Mascara mistakes
To avoid mascara flake-off or smudging on your face, apply a thin cost of mascara to top lashes only. Then run an eyelash brush through lashes to prevent clumpy mascara build-up.

Get a rosy glow
Want your face to radiate a healthy glow? Try using a gel blush or cream (instead of powder) in a rosy shade of pink to create a more natural look. Gels or creams are more transparent and blend smoothly – rub it on the apples of your cheek and blend up towards the eye for a glowing complexion.

Minute manicure
Need a fast fix for unpolished nails? File nails into a square shape, buff them to create a bit of shine and apply a clear coat of polish. Next rub in cuticle oil around the edges of the nail and moisturize your whole hand. It takes less than 15 minutes and will give your appearance a polished look.

Brow etiquette

Water - The Beverage Your Body Needs MostDrinking water is so important for good health. When you were a kid in school, you learned that each molecule of water is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. You may also have learned that it was great fun to fill up your squirt guns with water, at least until the principal caught you. What you may not have learned, however, was how much water you needed in order to be a healthy human being.
Why You Need to Drink WaterYour body is estimated to be about 60 to 70 percent water. Blood is mostly water, and your muscles, lungs, and brain all contain a lot of water. Your body needs water to regulate body temperature and to provide the means for nutrients to travel to all your organs. Water also transports oxygen to your cells, removes waste, and protects your joints and organs.
Signs of DehydrationYou lose water through urination, respiration, and by sweating.If you are very active, you lose more water than if you are sedentary. Diuretics such as caffeine pills and alcohol result in the need to drink more water because they trick your body into thinking you have more water than we need.

Symptoms of mild dehydration include chronic pains in joints and muscles,lower back pain, headaches and constipation. A strong odor to your urine, along with a yellow or amber color indicates that you may not be getting enough water. Note that riboflavin, a B Vitamin, will make your urine bright yellow. Thirst is an obvious sign of dehydration and in fact, you need water long before you feel thirsty.

How Much Water do You Need to Drink?A good estimate is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That gives you the number of ounces of water per day that you need to drink. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink at least 80 ounces of water per day. If you exercise you should drink another eight ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink alcohol, you should drink at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane. If you live in an arid climate, you should add another two servings per day. As you can see, your daily need for water can add up to quite a lot.
Twenty percent of your water need will come from the foods you eat. The rest of your water need should come from the beverages you drink. Water is the best choice. Sodas have a lot of sugar in them, so if you drink sodas, you may take in more calories than you need. Herbal teas that aren't diuretic are fine. Sports drinks contain electrolytes and may be beneficial, just look out for added sugar and calories that you don't need. Juices are good because they have vitamins and nutrients.
Caffeinated beverages will also add to your daily water need. Even though caffeine is a diuretic, if you regularly consume caffeine, your body will regulate itself to that diuretic effect.
Drink Enough WaterIt may be difficult to drink enough water on a busy day. Be sure you have water handy at all times by keeping a bottle for water with you when you are working, traveling, or exercising. If you get bored with plain water, add a bit of lemon or lime for a touch of flavor. There are some brands of flavored water available, but watch for extra calories.

One of the most important factors of skin care is skin cleansing. Because dirt, pollution, residual makeup, etc. can cause havoc to the skin leading to skin ailments and even hastening of the aging process.
Here's what you need to do, obvious may be, but not practiced as it should be:• Always wash your hands clean first. This will prevent the transfer of bacteria to your face.• Start with your hairline first, as hairstyling products attract dirt, and then sweep cleanser over face and lips and down the neck to beyond where you apply foundation.• After you've applied your cleanser, gently massage it in with the balls of your fingers and leave it on for a minute or so to allow make-up to melt away. Then use a soft cotton ball to wipe away dirt, pollution, and cosmetic build-up without tugging at the skin.• Then wash face clean with water and a good quality face wash so that all traces of dirt is gone and skin becomes perfectly clean.

SKIN TONING
Toning is necessary for all skin types and should be made a part of daily skin care routine. Toning is refreshing, improves blood circulation and adds a healthy glow to the skin.• Soak cotton wool pads in skin tonic and wipe face in outward and upward strokes.• Each movement should end at the temples. For dry skinMix ¾ cup rosewater, ¼ cup witch-hazel and ½ teaspoon glycerin or honey and store in a jar.
